Road hazards to keep an eye out for in spring and summer

On Behalf of | Mar 25, 2024 | Car Accidents

Spring and summer are favorite seasons for many to hit the road and enjoy the fresh air and blooming landscapes. However, amidst the beauty of spring driving, accidents can still occur.

As the weather changes, new hazards may present themselves, requiring drivers to stay alert. Keep safety a top priority with these tips to avoid any unfortunate incidents.

Potholes from winter weather damage

As snow and ice melt, they can seep into cracks in the pavement. This causes it to weaken and form potholes. The sudden appearance of potholes could catch you off guard, leading to an accident or damage to your vehicle.

To stay safe, stay alert and watch out for potholes on the road. Slow down when approaching areas with visible damage, which can reduce the risk of hitting a pothole unexpectedly. Also, report any hazardous road conditions you encounter to help ensure road crews can promptly make repairs.

Increased activity from wildlife

As temperatures rise, animals become more active. They venture out of their winter habitats in search of food, mates and new territories. This heightened movement increases the likelihood of wildlife crossing roads and highways, leading to potential collisions.

Stay especially cautious when the weather warms. Deer, raccoons, squirrels and birds may dart across roads without warning. Adhering to speed limits can give you sufficient time to react. Stay alert for signs warning of animal crossings, especially in rural areas or near wooded areas. Additionally, remember that peak wildlife activity occurs near dawn and dusk.

The return of cyclists and pedestrians

Warmer weather motivates more people to choose to walk or bike. A surge in foot and bike traffic is another hazard that can catch you off guard. This is particularly true if these travelers do not dress appropriately in bright or reflective clothing. Watch for pedestrian crossings and bike lanes, and remember to share the road by giving these individuals sufficient space.

A more pleasant climate does not mean you can let your guard down when driving. Watching out for different hazards keeps everyone safe. However, if someone’s neglect still causes you to have an accident, you can prepare to file a claim to recover the damages you are due.
