5 most common reasons for construction accident injuries in MA

On Behalf of | Feb 24, 2023 | Workers' Compensation

Construction accidents are common in Massachusetts, which is not surprising considering the size of the construction industry in the state. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 127,940 construction-related jobs in Massachusetts in 2021.

What makes construction work so dangerous? Here are five of the most common reasons for construction accident injuries in Massachusetts.

1. OSHA violations

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration outlines and enforces safety measures in the workplace. Accidents and injuries often result when companies fail to implement these precautions. According to OSHA, the most common citations include lack of fall protection, improper control of hazardous energy and inadequate ladders and scaffolding.

2. Machinery issues

Due to the extensive use of machinery in construction, many construction injuries are machinery-related. Machinery issues are often the result of improper maintenance, lack of safeguards or malfunction.

3. Human error

Human error accounts for many construction accidents and injuries. In many cases, the actions of a coworker result in a workplace injury.

4. Inadequate PPE

An employer must provide and enforce the use of appropriate personal protective equipment, such as hardhats, respirators and safety glasses. Inadequate PPE makes construction workers vulnerable to injuries.

5. Weather conditions

Accidents often happen when construction workers continue to work outside in unsafe weather conditions, such as wind, torrential rain and lightning. Mud created by rainy conditions also presents a slip-and-fall hazard.

Many factors affect construction workers’ safety on the job site, but injuries are often preventable. It is important to hold accountable those responsible for ensuring safety.
