Is hands-free talking really safer?

by | Jun 14, 2021 | Car Accidents

People often assume texting is the most dangerous distracted driving activity, but there are countless hazardous actions that can be performed while behind the wheel. Even though vehicle technology and electronic device designers strive to make drivers safer, the truth is that certain activities will always pull a driver’s attention and focus away from the road.

While the majority of states make it illegal to complete a cell phone call while holding the device in your hand, most also restrict the use of hands-free devices for drivers who are under 18 years of age. At least in some part, hands-free calls are recognized as potentially hazardous. Unfortunately, the restrictions end there.

Hands-free devices can include:

  • Speaker phone
  • Headphones
  • Bluetooth headsets
  • Dashboard phone controls

It is critical to remember that the distracting elements of the phone call are not limited to simply holding the device. The conversation itself can represent a cognitive distraction, forcing the driver to keep his or her thoughts from focusing on the road, traffic patterns and actions of the drivers sharing the area.

No matter the experience level or type of technology used, it is often best to wait to have a conversation after reaching the destination. There is an app available for nearly every phone that gives callers or texters a “do not disturb” warning letting them know the driver is behind the wheel and will respond when he or she has safely reached their destination.

Distracted driving collisions can lead to catastrophic injuries such as brain damage, paralysis, amputation and multiple fractures. If you were injured in a wreck caused by a distracted or inattentive driver, it is wise to seek guidance regarding your options for monetary compensation.
